Snack

August 11th, 2007

I’ve been enjoying an extended summertime hiatus from Film & Food.   However, I couldn’t keep myself from posting the trailer for The Darjeeling Limited.  I’m a big Wes Anderson fan, I’ll admit.  I’m looking forward to this film, as I’m sure many of you are. Enjoy!

Away from her

May 21st, 2007

Remember that scrawny but scrappy little girl in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen?  Or perhaps you remember her from Go or My Life Without Me or even Dawn of the Dead

Sarah Polley has always picked interesting projects and is a staunch advocate of independent filmwork and freedom as an artist.  Well, she’s all grown up now and is trying her hand at directing.  And what an endeavor.  Away From Her is a quiet, deftly-handled story about how Alzheimer’s affects the lives of an older couple.  For someone so young, Polley has approached this sensitive topic with grace beyond her years.  It’s fresh yet familiar and it just might break your heart.

Below the trailer, you can view a short speech/interview with the director talking a bit about her film at the Berlinale this year.

Foolish

May 1st, 2007

Strawberries are looking really great right now so I wanted to try something different in the way of dessert.   I happened to see some mascarpone in my favorite little Italian specialty shop on Perlova.  Those two ingredients swirled in my head and suddenly I thought: what better than a simple fool?  Boy, is that comment loaded!

Remembering Madrid

May 1st, 2007

When I visited Madrid, I ate pinchos (tapas) every day. My two favorites were chorizo and tortilla, washed down with a lovely glass (or two) of sangria.  My modus operendi was simple; peek into each little tapas bar and if what everyone else is eating looks good, go in!

I had two precious days to spend in this lovely city.  My first was spent in the Prado and nearby Reina Sofia, where I immersed myself in art and completely lost track of time.  That night, I had a wonderful flan at Restaurant Tijcal on Calle de la Cruz, near my hotel.  My dinner was simple but the waiters were attentive.  In fact, I had great service everywhere I went in Madrid.

Expelliarmus!

April 23rd, 2007

Yes, I’m a fan of Harry Potter.  I didn’t want to be but somehow, JK Rowling has cast her spell upon me, along with my children.

The newest film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, looks to be better even than the third (HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban), which I felt was the best of the series.

We’ll see what David Yates can do with the material when the film opens in July.  In the meantime, check out the trailer below:

Shakespeare…with ninjas

April 22nd, 2007

I really don’t know what to say to this.  Um, it looks gorgeous but haven’t we really had enough of contemporary interpretations of Shakespeare’s works? I like Kenneth Branagh and the other actors in this film but I dunno…ninjas?!?!

Beans, beans, good for your heart

April 20th, 2007

I won’t finish that little ditty but I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.  And beans are "good" for you.  They are great sources of minerals (potassium, zinc, and magnesium), fiber and protein.  Yes, and carbs too. Complex carbs, to be precise, which take longer to break down and digest, thereby giving us a steadier supply of energy than simple carbs.

I know it may be hard to believe, but even my 8-year-old asks for beans on a regular basis.  Her favorites are chickpeas but she’ll eat other kinds too.  I know, I know.  It’s astounding, with the availability of KFC, green ketchup and mac’n'cheese in a box, there are still children who ask for simple beans.

Golden

April 19th, 2007

I’ve been waiting years for this "sequel," which could be considered a "prequel" since it takes place 15 years before the final events in Elizabeth.

Cate Blanchett, in all her majestic glory, and a cast of tremendously talented actors will bring Shekhar Kapur’s The Golden Age to the screen. Finally. The on-again, off-again project is now in post-production, having completed principal photography in late August of 2006.  It’s scheduled for release in October.

This trailer isn’t the best but it’ll do for now.  Enjoy!

Let it Be

April 13th, 2007

I adore John Lennon as much as anyone.  I have enjoyed (most of) his music.  He was an interesting person with a lot to say and a talented way of saying it.  Yet, when I recently saw The US vs. John Lennon,  I thought, "Yoko, honestly, let it go, woman."  Did she financially back the producers or filmmakers of this documentary?  They so obviously painted her in the best of lights.  I don’t hate the woman. I’m not one of those "Yoko broke up the Beatles" crazies.  However, enough is enough.

I watched in hopes of learning something new about this enigmatic man, who left his imprint on millions.  I wanted to know more about his activism, his journey towards peace.  I wanted to see interviews and footage I’d never seen before.  If you’re going to make a documentary, sure, give a basic introduction for the newbies but give the fans something as well.

Yoko’s few and stunted interview snippets added absolutely nothing.  If she wanted to be a part of this project, as well she should for she was aligned with John in much of his peace work, why didn’t Yoko speak more about that? Why wouldn’t she shed more light on his activities and goals, his paranoia when discovering he was being followed and their phone tapped by the U.S. government? Give us an insight into what hasn’t been revealed.  Wasn’t this film about uncovering secrets? Where were the secrets? Underneath Yoko’s newsboy cap?

Must have soup

April 13th, 2007

I am a woman who believes you should give in to your cravings. You have them for a reason. Life is too short to over-analyze our yearnings.  Food-wise, anyway.

I needed soup.  There was no doubt about it.  With spring officially arrivé, sayeth my calendar, there were still days when it was chilly or dark or otherwise known as "soup weather."

So, I indulged myself with a bowl of comfort and happiness and cute little pasta shapes.
